March 23 2011. Day 3 Rome

Great day! We had breakfast in the hotel, the Pantheon Royal Suites, with Bob and Tamara. Breakfast consists of pretty good coffee with hot milk, San Peligrino, endless pastries, some weird bacon?, scrambled eggs, bulk yoghurt and a few other things.

With her 3 bowls of protein powder covered cereal with yoghurt mixer
I wouldn't pay extra for it but it is included with the room. We had the tiniest little room with no window so today moved to an even smaller room with a window overlooking a court yard but open sky and fresh air!! Yay!!

This is the new room with a window.  All 4 walls are in this photo.  room is about 9' x 9'

We walked to the Piazza del Popolo where we saw this ancient Egyptian obolesk, one of several in Rome.  How did they get it from Egypt to Rome over 2000 years ago, when the obolesk was already 1000 years old, then they moved it across land and propped it up in the centre of the Circo Massimo for 1600 years, and then moved it again, across town to this site where they set in on this granite base??  And it has been here for 400 years and not fallen over or broken.  Amazing to me!!!

From Popolo, we walked to the Spanish Steps.  Here are Tamara, Bob and Rick almost at the top.

We continued on to the Borghese Gallery where we had 1:00pm reservations and saw some of the most amazing Bernini sculptures.  We were not permitted to take photos inside.  By the time we completed our tours, we were all hungry so went back the Pantheon piazza for dinner.  Tamara and I in front of the Pantheon

followed by a walk to get some gelato at the famous (around here anyway) Giolitti

and then on to the Trevi Fountain.
