SIEM REAP, December 8, 2011 Kompong Pluk & Floating Forest

\

We arrived by boat to find Kompong Pluk is a village of over 5000 people all living in houses on stilts.  Kompong Pluk, a permanent village on Tonle Sap Lake flood plane as opposed to floating, is about 25 kilometers east of Chong Khneas.  Kompong Pluk is accessible by boat only.  This village exists almost exclusively on fishing and related activities. Houses are built on stilts up to 10 m high, and the village is surrounded by flooded forest.

Pigs and chickens for future meals in the cage on the water.

Kitchen of the guest house.  Note the gaps in the floor down to the water and an open flame fire boiling the water.   How safe is this?

Women sorting a recent fish catch

Tamara on our boat.  They put down a rug for us but no locals use a mat

Kids swimming/bathing just off the stairs to their home

A little food market.
